It was slated for demolition just a few months ago, but on Sunday, a historic apartment building was moved from downtown San Jose to another location where it will be restored for low-income families.

The beautiful old structure that was saved was moved from its original home on Fourth St.

“Well, there’s a high-rise tower being planned for this site, and we felt that this building is a historic building,” said Andre Luthard, the president of the Board of Directors of the Preservation Action Council in San Jose. “It was designed by Wolfe & McKenzie, which is a famous, San Jose-based architectural firm.”

At its new home at the corner of Fourth and Reed St., the building will be restored into low-income apartment units and sold.

“Everyone who is involved didn’t give up,” said Ben Leech, the executive director of PAC. “A number of people could have given up, and it would have been to the landfill. But, everybody recognized how much of a win-win this could be and stuck with it.”
