The latest crime statistics in the city of Oakland were released Friday and show an increase in homicides compared to this time last year.
In response, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong announced a new strategy to reduce violent crime.
It’s called the Violent Crimes Operation Center. Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said dozens of officers will be faster to respond to shootings and other gun crimes across the city.
So far this year, Oakland has had 34 homicides - up 230% from last year. The issue the department is facing is continued calls to defund the police.
"I don’t think we can be more responsible with less resources," said Armstrong. "We are dealing with huge spikes in violent crime. The call for less, I think, is not appropriate at this time, and I think it’s about accountability."
Police have made nearly a dozen arrests and have towed up to 20 vehicles in connection with illegal sideshows. Trash, noise and traffic complaints around Lake Merritt are also a big issue they plan to address, working with community ambassadors this weekend.
"We’ll be there to support and make sure the lake is safe, that people are following laws, and that other city agencies are able to go about their actual business," the chief said.
