SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – This weekend, sailing teams from nine countries will ply the waters of San Francisco, competing for the Grand Final prize in the SailGP competition.

SailGP is similar to the international competition America's Cup, but the boats travel at much faster speeds. The F50 catamarans sit above the surface of the water and can exceed 60 miles per hour.

Nine teams are participating on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, in San Francisco Bay on a short course parallel to the Marina Green.

"SailGP is really set up to be close to shore in stadiums, so fans are looking at these nine boats hitting speeds upwards of 60 miles per hour and almost the spray is coming right at you," said Laura Muma with team USA. "It really is a cool experience that, even if you don't understand sailboat racing, you love action, you love adrenaline, you love excitement."

On the course, the catamarans race so close to one another that there have been a number of spills in the past where teams were knocked out of the competition.

Don't miss this exciting competition. Tickets are available at the SailGP website. Attendees will have access to tiered grandstand seating with food and beverages available for purchase, as well as live commentary and broadcast viewing.
