
Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a small but loud explosion Monday night caused by illegal fireworks, jolting downtown Walnut Creek.
The blast also shattered the window of a commercial building at 1200 Mt. Diablo Blvd near Mt. Pisgah.
Neighbors called 911 and reported the bang at 10:30 pm.
Police searched the surrounding area and found remnants of industrial-grade fireworks, large devices and the makings of a metal pipe bomb.
Investigators confirmed to KPIX they arrested 32-year old Shayne Guerrero on several charges including possession of illegal fireworks, child endangerment and vandalism.
The late night explosion comes on the heels of San Mateo police confiscating nearly 15,000 pounds and nearly $1 million worth of illegal fireworks on Monday as part of an investigation into a major distribution line for illegal explosives.
Police continue to warn residents of the dangers of illegal fireworks with the Fourth of July holiday approaching.
