One of John Madden's unique traits was a tremendous memory.
There was no more unforgettable game than the game no one got to see.

We're talking about the infamous "Heidi Game" in November 1968, in which the Oakland Raiders scored two late touchdowns to beat the New York Jets 43-32. But no one got to see that exciting finish – NBC broke away from coverage of the game to show the TV movie "Heidi."
At that time, Madden was the team's linebackers' coach.
"The fact that you were there meant that you didn’t know what the heck was happening on television," Madden recalled.
The Madden Family is holding a public memorial in celebration of John's life on Monday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. at RingCentral Coliseum in Oakland.
Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster.
They cost $32.14, the final score of Super Bowl XI when Coach Madden's Raiders beat the Minnesota Vikings to win their first Super Bowl. All proceeds will be directed to Madden Charities for the benefit of the John Madden Foundation to provide educational opportunities for the youth of Oakland.
