Thousands of people will be vaccinated Tuesday after a joint state-federal mass vaccination site opened at the Oakland Coliseum.

The site is a joint effort between CAL OES and the White House and part of the Biden administration’s plan to open 100 vaccination sites, both big and small, in its first 100 days.

The parking lot was buzzing as the first patients made their way through a maze of orange pylons.

About 6,000 people from Alameda County will get vaccinated at the site on its first day.

Another site is also opening at CSU LA and the two sites are aimed at underserved communities.

Oakland City Council member Rebecca Kaplan said it took a lot of work behind the scenes to get the site up and running.

"To get the Coliseum site open, to be able to serve a lot more people and to have the federal and state government partner with us to provide the vaccine and the other resources so that we can make sure both that we’re serving more people more quickly and that those who’ve been left out have access to vaccine."

Appointments are available through the state’s MyTurn website.
