Oakland Coliseum's mass vaccination site leads national effort

President Joe Biden's push to create mass vaccination centers across the country is starting right in the Bay Area, as a new COVID-19 mass vaccination site is expected to open in a matter of days at the Oakland Coliseum.

The massive white tents that were set up this week at the Coliseum could soon pop up in parking lots across the state and the nation.

President Biden announced a wider effort to establish 100 large vaccination sites nationwide in his administration's first 100 days. Now the California Office of Emergency Services partnered with the federal government on the pilot project at sites in Oakland and Los Angeles.

Health officials said they expect to vaccinate 6,000 people per day at the Coliseum, beginning Tuesday.

There will be a separate walk-in entrance to the site for those arriving via BART, who will be checked in near the BART walkway to the Coliseum.

Once residents receive their shots, medical staff will observe them for any possible side effects during a 15-minute period.

Residents can make an appointment at myturn.ca.gov.
