A movement to merge Mills College, the historic women’s campus in Oakland, and Boston’s Northeastern University was halted on Thursday.
A judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking the union on Aug. 5, after it a member of the school's board of trustees revealed that Mills College was allegedly withholding information.
The original plans for Mills College to be absorbed by Northeastern University were announced in June, in an effort to help the women’s college with economic struggles. The news angered many students and alumni.
Save Mills College Coalition, a student and teacher-led group opposing the affiliation, stated that the merger would "certainly terminate Mills’ historic mission, character, and status as an independent women’s college."
Alameda Superior Court Judge Stephen Pulido will now determine the necessity of the merger, deciding if further examination into Mills’ financial records is necessary.
