The city of Lafayette will eliminate trick-or-treating this Halloween and instead host a “Dress Up Drive” due to the COVID-19 crisis.
Families are invited this year to put on their costumes and participate in a socially distant “Dress Up Drive,” by decorating their homes or cars on Oct. 31 and driving around town to view spooky decorations.
Lafayette Parks, Trails and Recreation Director Jonathan Katayanagi said they’re discouraging trick-or-treating.
“This is a bring your own candy event,” he told KCBS Radio. “So, we’re encouraging families to bring their own candy as they tour the town, and we’re asking that any houses that participate not hand out candy.”
The Lafayette mom who came up with the idea has a 5-year-old son. She said there is a silver-lining to staying at home this year.
“The beauty is, instead of us splitting apart and one person taking our son trick-or-treating and the other one staying home, we can now stay at home,” said Lauren. “We’re going to decorate to the fullest our house, and then we’ll see people driving by and seeing our neighbors’ houses.”
Residents can register their home on the map for Halloween night on the city’s website.
