The absence of a large Pride parade in San Francisco this year has made way for an event celebrating LGBTQ+ people of color.

Hundreds of people gathered in San Francisco Sunday morning for the People’s March and Rally on Polk St. The first People’s March took place last June as a culmination of the canceled Pride parade and the impassioned Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd.

Now, the tradition has begun.

This year’s march was led by an all-Black and Brown committee of queer and trans community leaders, artists and performers, according to gay activist and drag queen Juanita More.

More, the newly-crowned Empress of the Imperial Council - an activist group at the center of San Francisco’s queer community - told KCBS Radio that even she had felt left out of Pride in the past when she found herself "pushed to the back." More now dedicates her work to creating inclusive spaces for everyone.

State Senator Scott Weiner, who was also at the event, told KCBS Radio he feels this event has "brought the Pride celebration back to its roots."
