3 East Bay schools cancel class, lock down after dead body discovered near wires

Lockdowns have been lifted at two East Bay schools after the discovery of a man's body at a nearby school on Monday morning, and police say the man died of self-inflicted injuries that could've been the result of a homemade explosive device.

The Antioch Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order on F Street between West 11th and West 17th streets after a man's body was discovered near wires at Live Oak High School, prompting lockdowns at nearby Fremont Elementary School and Antioch Middle School. Police lifted the order just before 2:30 p.m.

Police found a man's body with "severe trauma" on Monday morning. Officials said he was a white man in his 50s, and police haven't publicly identified him.

Antioch police called in the Walnut Creek Police Department bomb squad at around 7:30 a.m., according to a department spokesperson. Police posted the shelter-in-place order on Facebook at 11 a.m., editing it 30 minutes later to say nearby schools were "already in lockdown."

The Contra Costa County Community Warning System alert initially said people in the affected area would need to stay indoors for four hours "unless you receive further official instructions." A police Facebook post was edited at 2:27 p.m. to say the order had been lifted.
