In the case of San Francisco Mayor London Breed, rooting for the Giants has been a lifelong endeavor.
The Giants didn't win all that much during Breed's childhood, outside of postseason trips to the 1987 National League Championship Series and the all-Bay Area World Series against the Oakland Athletics two years later.
That has made San Francisco's success in 2021, nearly a decade removed from winning three championships in five years, all the sweeter.
"I gotta say, I'm so excited about what they're doing," Breed told KCBS Radio on Wednesday. "So many of the players have been amazing this season, they've been great to watch."
The Giants won a franchise-record 107 regular-season games, earning the National League West crown and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Because of that, they'll host the rival Los Angeles Dodgers with their season on the line Thursday night.
Game 5 of the National League Division Series is set for 6:07 p.m. PT at Oracle Park, with a capacity crowd of about 42,000 set to attend. It should be a far cry from the games the mayor grew up attending.
As a kid, the mayor would sneak into Candlestick Park. These days, she shouldn't have to.
"I can get in. Yes, if I buy a ticket I could probably get in," Breed quipped to KCBS Radio. "We can't sneak in like Candlestick!"
The Giants have to win Game 5 in order to keep their season alive, which the mayor is also predicting.
"We're gonna beat LA," she said.
