Police arrested a man who brandished a replica rifle in public and directed it towards officers in Oakland on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. in the area of Skyline Blvd. and Joaquin Miller Rd., according to police.

Authorities said they received reports from community members of a man walking in public armed with a rifle.

Air support located the suspect and observed him appearing to point a rifle in their direction.

Ground officers directed vehicle and pedestrian traffic away from the scene. Police were able to establish communication with the suspect and asked him to surrender. The individual complied and was safely taken into custody.

Officers determined through a preliminary investigation that the rifle was a replica and "incapable of firing live ammunition."

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call 510-238-3426.
