The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department engineered a dramatic rescue Tuesday after a man appeared to have fallen off a cliff and into the Pacific Ocean at Fort Ross, becoming entangled in what’s thought to be fishing line.

The man was in the water for about 30 minutes, roughly 50 yards from the shore.

Sonoma County Sheriff's Department Spokesperson Misti Wood told KCBS Radio that after attempts to reach him from the water’s edge were unsuccessful, a rescue paramedic was lowered from a helicopter to the spot where the man was caught, cut the line and pulled him to safety.

The incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

He was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

The U.S. Coast Guard, California Department of Parks and Recreation and Timber Cove Fire Department assisted in the rescue.
