Marin County's unemployment rate sits at just 2.4%, which is a sign of an improving economy but hiring problems still linger.

"The total amount of people unemployed has fallen but the number of people in the labor force has fallen more," Bob Eyler told KCBS Radio.

Eyler is Chief Economist with the Marin Economic Forum, he said the pandemic created a number of economic conditions that drove people out of the workforce.

"There have been some outbound workers that have left and gone other places," he said. "Or that we have seen retirements in folks have not gone back into the workforce, or there are folks that were working pre-pandemic that chosen not to go back into the workforce."

He said most Bay Area counties are showing similar trends. Another factor for the labor force decreasing is that those self-employed are not counted.

"Some of the exit from the labor force could be those people who are working, but are now working in let's say a gig job as the case may be," he explained.

Statewide the unemployment rate is just under 5%.
