Shoreline Unified School District’s superintendent has been arrested on suspicion of child molestation.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office said Robert Patrick Raines, 66, was booked on Tuesday for allegedly committing a sexual act with a child younger than 14. Officers started investigating Raines on June 1 after the Marin County Office of Education learned of the alleged conduct, police said.

"The district took swift and immediate action notifying the Marin County Sheriff's Office and placed Mr. Raines on leave," Mary Jane Burke, head of the Marin County Office of Education, told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing more details about the case. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the alleged victim was a student at a school in the Shoreline Unified School District.

Raines was hired to lead the district in 2016, overseeing five schools and an estimated 500 students. He was previously principal at Petaluma’s Wilson Elementary School, the paper said.

Raines was just weeks away from retirement, according to the Marin Independent Journal. He’s called the allegations "false."

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Raines was 67.
