The county hasn't called a winner, and her opponent, social justice attorney and fellow Democrat Janani Ramachandran, hasn't conceded.

Bonta, President of the Alameda Unified School District, and Ramachandran qualified for the Aug. 31 runoff to fill the vacant Assembly seat. A special election was first called after California Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed Rob Bonta, Mia Bonta’s husband, as Attorney General.

Mia Bonta had 35,501 votes to Ramachandran’s 27,740 as of Thursday afternoon, after 16,426 additional votes were counted following Tuesday night’s results. There were 30,000 outstanding ballots entering Thursday.

Since Rob Bonta was reelected last year, the special election winner will serve the remainder of the term as 18th District Assemblymember and face reelection themselves next November.
