Steve Bruemmer, 62 of Monterey, was swimming off of Lover's Point Beach in Pacific Grove when he was attacked Wednesday morning. Police responded to the scene at around 10:35 a.m. where they found Bruemmer suffering from significant injuries.

Officials told KSBW the attack occurred about 150 yards from the beach and the injuries were to the swimmer's stomach and legs. Bruemmer was transported to a local hospital where doctors called his injuries some of the worst shark-bite wounds they have ever seen, causing him to require 25 pints of blood. Despite the severity, he is expected to make a full recovery, KTVU reported.

Bruemmer remains hospitalized at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas.

Authorities used a drone to search for the shark, but have been unable to locate it.

The areas of Lovers Point Beach and Sea Palm were closed following the attack until Saturday.
