SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – Someone has been stealing utility covers across San Francisco over the past two years.

The San Francisco Police Department said more than 400 of these sidewalk utility covers have been reported stolen by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

Two types of these covers have gone missing.  One is dark-colored, oval-shaped cast iron covers with ‘San Francisco Water Department’ inscribed.  The other is white or light-colored rectangular concrete covers with ‘SFPUC’ engraved on them.

These missing covers create tripping hazards for people walking on sidewalks around the city.

The police department is working with the public utilities commission to get these covers back.

If you see someone trying to remove these covers – or you see someone who has one of them – you are asked to call 911 immediately.

If you happen to find any of these covers out and about – or you see a cover missing – you are asked to call 311 so they can be replaced.
