In an effort to share a more complete history of Muir Woods National Monument, an informational placard has been altered to highlight the existence of racism and misogyny in the park.
Caution tape and a sheet of paper have been attached to a sign containing information about the park’s founding, as well as a timeline of the park’s history, SFGATE reported.
"Alert: History Under Construction," the paper reads. "Everything on this sign is true but incomplete."
Muir Woods has often been credited to John Muir, the namesake of the park, and other white men for saving the redwood forest from commercial construction.
"While they undoubtedly contributed to the forest becoming a national monument, part of our duty in the National Park Service is to tell the full story of how that happened," the paper continues. "Look at the timeline below to see the park’s history under construction."
This project is a collaboration between Muir Woods staff members and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area to highlight the original indigenous managers of the forest as well as the role of women in the creation of Muir Woods, which were both previously erased, the newspaper said.
