One day after former San Francisco Department of Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru was arrested for allegedly pulling a knife on an employee at a food bank and trying to steal a bag of chips, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin said no charges would be filed in the incident.

Boudin’s office said that Wednesday's incident, which happened at the SF-Marin Food Bank in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood, was not an armed robbery but rather a questionable joke.

Officials explained Nuru was in the kitchen of the food bank where he was volunteering when he held up a kitchen knife.

It's believed he joked about taking someone’s potato chips.

Nuru is the man at the center of a San Francisco City Hall corruption scandal involving alleged wire fraud, bribes and kickbacks.

In January 2020, Nuru was arrested by federal agents along with Lefty O’Doul’s restaurant owner Nick Bovis in an alleged attempt to bribe a San Francisco International Airport commissioner for help to obtain a restaurant concession.

Since Nuru’s arrest, a dozen defendants linked to the corruption investigation have been charged in federal court.
