A Valley Springs house intruder, who was fatally shot Sunday, was the son of the former homeowner, police say.

Lenin Elizalde, 28, had multiple troubling run-ins with new residents of the Valley Springs home before being fatally shot on Oct. 10, including threatening them and refusing to leave the property.

Elizalde was first discovered at the home the day before the shooting. He was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry into a dwelling, vandalism and possession of methamphetamine.

Elizalde told police that the ranch-style house in the Sierra Nevada foothills belonged to his family and that he planned to return.

At around 12:25 a.m. Sunday, a second 911 call was made from the home reporting that a stranger had kicked in the front door and attacked one of the occupants, and that a second occupant had shot the attacker. When police arrived, they found Elizalde suffering from gunshot wounds and declared him dead at the scene.

The residents were taken to a local hospital for treatment. They have not been arrested or cited, the sheriff's office said.

This is an ongoing investigation.
