Officials there are hoping to clear the shelter by adopting away 50 big dogs in the next five days.
The shelter is hitting capacity and looking for help from the community to make some more room.
"We've extended our adoption hours," said Ann Dunn, the director for Oakland Animal Services. "Monday is a holiday normally, we would be closed."
"But we're opening for adoptions, we want to just make this as accessible as possible for people to come down and help," she said.
This extra lift is to due to an influx of dogs currently residing at the shelter.
"Today we have 98 dogs in the shelter, we have 76 dogs in foster homes," she said.
The big dogs in particular are becoming tougher to find space for.
"Oftentimes people talk themselves out of adopting – they say it's not the right time, I'm too busy, my space is messy – whatever it is," said Dunn.
"I always say – what you can offer in a home is going to be a million times better than what a dog experiences here," she said.
Whether the dog is young or older, active or more subdued, the team at the shelter works hard to make sure a prospective owner and pup are well-suited for each other.
"If you're a first-time adopter, you're a highly skilled adopter, we have the dog for you," said Dunn.
Adoption fees will also be waived during this time.
