Petaluma becomes first city in the nation to ban construction of new gas stations

Petaluma has become the first in America to ban the construction of new gas stations in an effort to accelerate the shift to electronic vehicles.

This comes 14 years ahead of California's ban on sales of new gas-powered vehicles, which takes effect in 2035.


Existing gas stations in Petaluma will be prohibited from adding new gas pumps, and will instead be encouraged to build electronic charging bays. This is the furthest any city in America has gone on limiting the number of gas stations in their town and could lead to a more doing instituting similar measures.

The move has been applauded by SAFE (Stand Against Fossil Fuel Expansion), cities and Sonoma County's CONGAS (Coalition Opposing New Gas Stations).

A group In Washington State known as Coltura is working to phase out gas entirely in the state and around the country.
