The race to replace Barbara Lee will likely be tight. Eric Jaye, the founder of Storefront Political Media, told KCBS Radio over the next four weeks potential candidates will test their viability with polls, fundraising and endorsements. So far, the list of candidates is all of the above.
"The East Bay has long been a center of political activism and political leadership," Jaye said.
Assemblymember Mia Bonta has announced she's considering running. The seat will also draw interest from her fellow Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and State Senator Nancy Skinner. Supervisors and city council members will also likely participate in the race.
"With so many democrats, it's hard for anyone to really stand out and so I think in that race, as well as Adam Schiff's seat, as well as Katy Porter's seat, you're going to see a lot of competition," said Stephen Maviglio, a Sacramento-based democratic strategist.
Barbara Lee held the seat for 24 years before her announcement to run for Senate. Mindy Romero, director of the Center of Inclusive Democracy at USC, told KCBS Radio the eventual winner could mark a generational shift.
"Age can play a part in it, but it's really about orientation, perspective and, of course, platform," she said.
