SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – In the wake of the latest storms, a big sinkhole shut down Highway 92 on Thursday, effectively cutting off Half Moon Bay from the rest of the Peninsula.

In the meantime, local restaurants are stepping up to help residents impacted by the closure and the storms by providing free meals.

At one such restaurant, Taqueria La Gallina, the cooks are working overtime preparing meals for residents of Half Moon Bay and surrounding communities who have either lost power or been forced from their homes due to the storms.

"We're making like, 500 lunches right now," said Manager Christian Alvarado on Friday, a mix of chicken and steak burritos.

The restaurant, at 250 Cabrillo Highway South, will be preparing around 500 dinners too.

They've partnered with World Central Kitchen, the nonprofit founded by celebrity chef Jose Andres in 2010, to distribute the free food.

But they're glad to be busy. The business has taken a nose-dive during the recent storms, especially now that Half Moon Bay is cut off from Silicon Valley.

There's no word when the sinkhole that opened up on Highway 92 will be repaired, but locals are hoping as soon as possible.

Drivers can still get here using Highway 1, which remains open, but it takes longer than the usual route.
