A bull was euthanized by Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies on Thursday after a fatal altercation with a rancher, according to Steve Aubert, an East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Public Information Officer.

The call came in around noon on Thursday of an "unresponsive man down on the ground in a field" off of Bixler Road in Discovery Bay.

When the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District team got to the scene, a rural field, they came face to face with a bull.

The bull was acting aggressively, so backup from the sheriff's department and animal control was called.

It became clear that the bull was going to present a safety issue almost immediately, said Aubert. Medical personnel attempted to treat the man, but the bull kept getting too close.

Aubert couldn't confirm the exact details, but according to reporting by KPIX, a warning shot was fired to scare it off, but to no avail, and ultimately the bull was killed.

Despite medical intervention, the victim had died at the scene. His identity has not been made public while his family is being contacted.

The official cause of death has not yet been determined, said Aubert.

The investigation is still ongoing.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department did not respond to KCBS Radio's request for comment at the time of publication.
