Tiffany Carter and her sister started San Francisco Black Wallstreet three years ago.
"I'm also a Black business owner, I'm a Black woman, so it's important for us to create space to be able to have this economy and support local business," she told KCBS Radio. "We had a huge turnout the first year. That's just one of the things that I've learned as a business owner is we need to create space for ourselves, so that's what you'll see here."
The celebration was set up at Gilman Park. A music stage, free barbeque, pony rides and amusement park rides for the kids were among the festivities — fun for family members of all ages.
Makers and entrepreneurs were also selling their goods. "All the products are designed by a Black woman, it's a Black owned business, however, they are diverse," one vender said, describing her products.
"I'm here to have fun and enjoy the community and enjoy this great day," San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said.
In Antioch, another Juneteenth celebration was underway at Williamson Ranch Park where children got their faces painted, road horses, slid down amusement park slides and rock climbed. Attendees were also treated to free food and drinks and a live performance by Grammy Award winner Chrisette Michele.
Juneteenth was made the nation's 12th federal holiday in 2021. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to order freedom for the enslaved people of the state — two months after the Confederacy had surrendered in the Civil War.
