There's no better city to be a musician than San Francisco.

That's according to Rent.com, which analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau to rank the country's 150 biggest cities based on two metrics: Music-related business establishments per square mile, and the percentage of adults working in music-based occupations.

San Francisco had more music businesses per square mile (2.77) than any other city, and the third-highest percentage of adults working in music-related fields (4.92%).

A city filled with music history, a number of artists, genres and sounds called San Francisco home or started out there. Jazz, punk and rock have all thrived in the city, as have bands like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

"From its iconic architecture to the scenic views of the bay, the city's history, culture and atmosphere are sure to generate plenty of ideas for songs," Zoe Baillargeon, the report's author, wrote for the website. "Just walking around San Francisco will bring you face-to-face with famous spots from S.F. musical history, especially in the Haight district where many musicians lived."

San Francisco is filled with historic venues, like The Independent and The Fillmore, where big-name artists and locals headline, as well as smaller bars, clubs and restaurants featuring live music. Plus, the popular Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival occurs every year in Golden Gate Park.

Washington, home of go-go music, came in second. It had the second-highest share of adults working in music (5.8%).

Los Angeles had the highest share (6.3%), but it finished in a tie for seventh place overall with Pittsburgh. LA home to Capital Records and Paramount Recording Studio, as well as famous venues like the Troubadour and The Roxy.
