SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott gave a rare police apology Thursday for a police shooting last week that injured an auto burglary suspect.

The man, 23-year-old Xavier Pittman, was shot in the wrist by a plainclothes officer as he was being arrested. At an online town hall on Thursday, Scott said the shooting should not have happened and said he was "deeply sorry."

The shooting took place just before 1 p.m. last Friday in the city's SoMa neighborhood. Police said they were tracking three men they called known burglary suspects.

Pittman's attorney told the San Francisco Examiner that Pittman was unarmed and already being detained without struggle when he was hit by gunfire.
