Despite a surge in coronavirus cases in the city, San Francisco public schools continued to prepare this week for a Jan. 25 target date for the first group of children to return to in-person learning.

At John Muir Elementary, preparations included power washing the playgrounds and disinfecting the monkey bars with electrostatic spray.

“We also want to make sure we’re starting with a really clean slate,” said Cadi Poile, director of custodial services.

Poile told KCBS Radio that the elementary school playground is one of 40 open to kids before in-person classes start again.

“We are actually offering free programming and will be reopening the playground this weekend, per the department of health guidelines,” she said.

Work is continuing inside, as well. The city assigned disaster service workers to help with site assessments, such as checking ventilation.

“January 25th is our target date, as long as all of the public health indicators continue to be on our side in terms of opening, and also that we get the labor agreement that we are working on right now,” said Deputy Superintendent Gentle Blythe.

She said they will have to be flexible, as guidelines can change quickly.

Blythe added that families will always have the option to continue distance learning amid the pandemic, if they prefer.
