San Francisco will soon be home to a commercial hydrogen ferry.
As part of a statewide effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine has partnered with Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology to bring the world’s first commercial hydrogen ferry to Bay Area commuters.
Named the “Water-Go-Round,” the hydrogen ferry runs completely on electricity produced from the chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen.
The vessel, which can hold up to 84 passengers, generates zero harmful emissions and does not need to be recharged, unlike other electric vehicles.
Funding for the hydrogen ferry comes from California Climate Investments, a program dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment.
It is estimated that service on the Water-Go-Round could begin later this year.
