The San Jose Police Department told Bay Area News Group on Monday morning that a man shot and killed a security guard in an apartment complex parking lot the previous day.
Police alleged the man, whom they said was carrying a gun with the serial number scratched off, shot and killed the woman before dying by suicide. Neither the woman nor the man were subject to a restraining order, according to police.
Officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots just after 1 a.m., pronouncing all three people dead on the scene.
The woman lived in the apartments nearby, and police said the couple's six children – ranging between 1 and 10 years old – were at the complex. Authorities said it wasn't clear whether or not the children were inside or outside of it at the time of the shootings. They are now in their maternal grandmother's care.
Sgt. Christian Cammarillo told the outlet that the "very, very tragic incident" is the "worst-case scenario in a domestic dispute type of situation."
San Jose police said the security guard and the woman's deaths are being investigated as the 15th and 16th homicides in the city this year. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office will release the victim's identities after their next of kin has been notified.
