A San Jose man is the most recent Lake Berryessa drowning victim.
The body of a drowned swimmer—identified as 22-year-old Billy Dy—was located by The Napa County Sheriff’s Office in Lake Berryessa early Saturday morning.
Officer Henry Wofford told the Napa Valley Register that the station received a call on Friday at 4:55 p.m. regarding a man struggling in the water.
With assistance from Yolo County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol Air Operations, a search for Dy was conducted until nightfall. Limited visibility forced the deputies to suspend their search until Saturday morning, leading to the ultimate recovery of his body by a dive team at 9:30 a.m.
This is the first drowning in Lake Berryessa this year, following the record number of drownings—six in the first six months—last year.
Following these deaths, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office has produced a number of swimmer safety videos which can be found on their Facebook page.
In a Twitter statement, the Sheriff’s Office expressed its deepest condolences to Dy’s friends and family.
