The goal is to provide support and show solidarity for the thousands of Ukrainian residents of the city.

"That when there's some severe violation in their own respective home country, that their home city is going to stand up and do the right thing," said City Councilmember Sylvia Arenas.

Arenas wants to take it a step further, and end its relationship with a Russian City and instead throw support behind Ukrainian causes.

She made the proposal on Monday to end San Jose's sister city relationship with Ekaterinburg, Russia's 4th largest city, located east of the Ural Mountains.

If the military conflict ends, then, "we can have a different kind of conversation," said Arenas. "But at this point, I don’t know that there would be value in a dialogue within the sister cities."

The proposal could go before the city council next Tuesday.
