The policy applies to employees accused of crimes such as sexual misconduct, assault, theft or bribery, San Jose police said in a press release.
The policy change in California's third most populous city came after a former Code Enforcement Inspector was sentenced to prison for extorting sex from massage business owners, according to Mercury News. A police officer is being prosecuted on allegations of exposing himself to a family while responding to a call, the newspaper reported.
"These revisions reflect our deep commitment to doing everything possible to prevent similar incidents in the future," Anthony Mata, Chief of Police explained in a release.
Employees will be put on administrative leave or be reassigned to a different "non-public facing" job until an investigation is completed, the release said. The City Manager has the final approval on the employee's consequence. When new information becomes available an employee's status may be reevaluated.
"In every case, immediate action and collaboration with the City Manager's Office will ensure that decisions to remove an Officer or city employee from contact with the public are made at the highest levels and with the greatest urgency. Protecting the public is paramount; that is what this policy intends to do," Anthony Mata, Chief of Police explained in a release.
