The San Jose Police Department announced on Monday that officers arrested 41-year-old James Couch on March 7 on five charges of indecent exposure and three of annoying or molesting a child.
Officers booked Couch into the Santa Clara County Jail that same day. Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy Russell Davis told KCBS Radio on Monday that Davis posted $50,000 bail after he was arrested and booked on March 7.
Police said three children reported a man had flashed his genitals after asking them for directions between Oct. 27 and Dec. 15 of last year. A girl said she was flashed while walking alone near Ida Price Middle School, while two others said a man had exposed himself under the same circumstances when they were walking home on nearby Coit Drive and Leigh Avenue, respectively.
Coit Drive and Leigh Avenue intersect with Curtner Avenue. So does New Jersey Avenue, where the school is located.
After police on Dec. 17 asked for help identifying a suspect connected to the three incidents, two more children came forward to allege indecent exposure under similar circumstances. Both children believed theirs were connected based on description of the suspect and his vehicle.
The fourth incident occurred between Dec. 1 and Dec. 20 of last year, according to an arrest warrant shared with KCBS Radio, while the fifth occurred this Jan. 4. The warrant was filed and approved on Feb. 23.
Police later identified Couch as a suspect, and the five victims "positively identified" him after police "independently contacted" them, leading to his March 7 arrest.
Couch is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on April 7 at 9 a.m. in the San Jose Hall of Justice, according to Santa Clara County Superior Court and sheriff's office records.
Police said people with information about the incidents, or others, can contact Det. Baldwin Chan by calling (408) 277-4102 or emailing 4370@sanjoseca.gov.
