Amid the dominant delta variant, the San Jose Unified School District in Santa Clara County has updated its COVID-19 safety plan.

In a statement on Tuesday, SJUSD announced that it will require teachers and staff to be vaccinated or be subjected to multiple COVID-19 tests. This is the first Bay Area district to do so, but it may not be the last.

"Either be fully vaccinated, or if you’re not vaccinated then you have to complete testing twice a week," SJUSD Public Information Officer Jennifer Maddox told KCBS Radio.

The announcement follows new mask guidelines issued by the CDC and the California health department on July 26, recommending that all students and adults in K-12 environments keep masks on indoors.

SJUSD will require face coverings outdoors unless the person is alone, eating or drinking or participating in physical education, SFGATE reported.

The twice a week test policy may seem tedious to some Santa Clara County teachers and staff, a district teacher admitted, but it is necessary when considering the amount of unvaccinated people currently hospitalized for COVID-19.
