But following a fatal stabbing inside a classroom a week ago, some parents would like to see them brought back.
Parents and community members spoke out during Tuesday’s community meeting, a "listening session" for the district and school board.
It was a chance for students and their families to be heard.
One such parent argued that having a police officer present in school was the best defense they had, and that her son now wanted to become a sheriff following the recent violence.
But many students still say that they feel less safe with police officers on campus.
It's unclear what action might be taken at this point.
"The one thing that I can generalize is that the communities that have healed the best are the ones that have come together in that healing," said Dr. David Schonfeld, the director of the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement.
Schonfeld was present at Tuesday's meeting. His organization is dedicated to supporting students during times of crisis.
"I know that's really difficult," he said. "But I'm going to ask you to try."
