A safer shopping season is underway in San Francisco, as city officials, police and small store owners work to avoid a repeat of last year's smash and grab robberies.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott and District Attorney Brooke Jenkins joined Breed in Union Square on Tuesday to address the city's updated safety initiative known as the "Safe Shopper Program." "Through this program, my department will ensure visitors and residents alike remain safe during this year's holiday season in our city," Scott said.

"To all the folks who reached out and asked, 'mayor, why are we lighting up the tree and we haven't even had Thanksgiving' — things have changed, things are looking up and I am optimistic and excited about the future," Breed stated.

Along with a security bump, there will also be free parking in the Union Square garage.

"The other thing that I'm really excited to announce today, which I know many drivers would love to hear, and that is that we plan to offer at least one hour of free parking in Union Square garage," Breed said.

The number of undercover cops will be increased, as well as an increase of security in the garage.
