The name stays.
Sir Francis Drake Blvd. will keep its name in a majority of Marin County as a long-simmering controversy appears to have come to an end. The road’s namesake was a slave trader for a time, a controversy bubbling for years that boiled over during racial justice protests this past summer.
"I’ve heard the name many times and driven the road," one man told KCBS Radio. "I just wish they’d make it a little wider in parts."

The Marin County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 this week to reject a proposal to rename the road. The San Anselmo Town Council also struck down a name change. Ross and Larkspur opted to keep the name, but Fairfax will change the name along two miles of the boulevard that run thru it.
This isn't the first item with Drake's name to come up for discussion.
Officials removed a 30-foot-tall statue of Drake from a spot near the Larkspur Ferry Terminal in July. The Tamalpais Union High School District has also decided to strip the name from Sir Francis Drake High School in San Anselmo, which will be known as High School 1327 until a new name is chosen.
