A federal investigation is underway after a decomposed human body was discovered last week at Point Reyes National Seashore, officials announced Monday.

Rangers responded to reports on September 9 that skeletal remains were found in a remote location far away from both the shoreline and trails, the park service said. The remains appeared to have been at the site a long time.
Officials have not been able to determine the deceased person’s identity or cause of death, though foul play is not suspected at this time.
No other information, including the person’s gender, was released.
The National Park Service law enforcement and Marin County Sheriff’s Department are leading an investigating into the mysterious discovery.
