Many nature lovers saw “Park Closed” signs Wednesday, as East Bay Regional Parks officials shut off access due to high fire danger.

At least 10 of the East Bay’s regional parks will remain closed during the Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

“I really feel like if it’s dangerous, they will close the parks,” said 90-year-old Colleen Runge. “They’ll let us know.”

Runge told KCBS Radio that she doesn't blame park officials, but she does blame all people for contributing to global warming, which scientists say has made wildfires more intense.

“Homo sapiens have done a – we haven’t done a real good job of taking care of this beautiful planet,” Runge said.

The closed parks include Anthony Chabot, Claremont Canyon, Huckleberry, Reinhardt Redwood, Sibley, Tilden and Wildcat Canyon.

However, not on the list was Lake Chabot Park, where Leela was leading a workout squad.

“Well, you know, safety is first, so if they have to close in regards to safety, then that’s definitely number one,” she said. “But, I think it has been a breath of fresh air that the parks have been open, like Lake Chabot.

All parks should reopen at 11 a.m. Friday, when the Red Flag Warning is set to expire.
