The Bay Area’s giving nature has been on full display over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, but with a third wave now gathering force, South Bay health officials say the donations need to keep coming.

Dr. Sanjay Kurani, Medical Director Inpatient Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Director, said his hospital has been on the receiving end of a tremendous amount of charitable giving through the spring and summer.

But now, donations are starting to slow down.

"More than ever, we need to be able to partner with the community again and try to hopefully get through what we think is this final push through this winter until we can get these vaccines out," Dr. Kurani said.

With COVID-19 cases surging in California and nationwide, it’s coming at the worst time.

In response, the Valley Medical Center Foundation, which has been coordinating medical donations in the South Bay, is calling for more help.

"Like any crisis, donor fatigue will set in and as we’ve seen over the past few months, donations begin to drop off," said Chris Wilder, Valley Medical Center Foundation President and Executive Director. "That’s to be expected. The problem is, now is no time for that to happen."

He said hospitals are still going through thousands and thousands of masks and gloves each day.
