Unhealthy air conditions across the Bay Area have forced an extension of an existing Spare The Air alert through Friday, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced on social media.

The agency said the alert was extended "due to unhealthy ozone, or smog accumulation in the Bay Area." Pollutants from wildfires happening in Arizona continue to drift into the region, compounding the problematic air.

Residents have been asked to limit driving.

Given the crippling heat and light wind that's currently impacting the Bay Area, along with longer days, ozone levels – or smog – can build up to unhealthy and concerning levels, officials explained.
