The pursuit started with a report of a home invasion and burglary. "Sometime around four o'clock this morning there was an incident in Half Moon Bay where the sheriff’s office responded to a burglary where a vehicle was stolen," Art Art Montiel, Redwood City CHP Public Information Officer, told KCBS Radio.

Authorities chased the suspect through Pacifica down Interstate 280 where they lost the vehicle. A call was issued for police to be on the lookout for the stolen white Ford Mustang. "The San Mateo PD was able to get on pursuit on 92, but then they lost the vehicle on 92 near Edgewater," Montiel said.

The suspect then drove the vehicle onto the San Mateo Bridge. Police believe he ran out of gas, abandoning the car to continue on foot, but was struck and killed by oncoming traffic.

The collision initially blocked all eastbound lanes of the bridge, which were reopened after a few hours around 7:30 a.m.

The driver who hit the suspect stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities.
