We're coming out of a pandemic, inflation is stubborn and politics are uncertain. "Then you add unexpected layoffs to a mass amount of people who have never really gone through that before, at least a lot of these people have never gone through that before," Santa Clara University Psychology Professor Thomas Plant told KCBS Radio.
Plant explained that the stress of a lost job is often a social contagion. "Even if someone is not laid off they may see all of the stressors around them with their friends, colleagues and coworkers and so forth that were laid off and they may absorb some of that stress, wondering when the next shoe's going to drop," he said.
Anxiety and job strain manifests in different ways for different people. "Perhaps search out an appropriate mental health professional like a psychologist or something like that, or even just talk to their family physician," Plant recommended.
The stress may also be compounded for many by timing as we enter the holiday season with the pressure of gift giving and family gatherings.
