The shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. near 64th Street and Camden Avenue, just blocks away from Mills College.

Officers arrived on the scene and found the two teenagers suffering from gunshot wounds, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said during a press briefing. The 16-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim, an 18-year-old, was hospitalized and is in stable condition.

KTVU reported that the boy, who the outlet identified as Keyez Brooks, attended Hayward High School and was visiting his grandfather. He was shot on the sidewalk from sone inside car that pulled up next to him. The other boy that was shot was Brooks' cousin.

Armstrong said police are "unsure" of a possible motive.

"We know that it was a high powered rifle that was shot and we know that people saw what happened out here," he said. "I think everybody should be concerned when a child is gunned down and I hope anyone that has any information related to this unfortunate homicide, as they do with every homicide, I hope they bring that information forward."

"It is something that we in our community have to take a stance against because if kids can't walk down the street without being victims of a barrage of gunfire, it says that we have a problem."

The fatal shooting was the 54th homicide in Oakland this year and police said guns were used in almost all of the killings.
