If there was any doubt as to the sudden and soaring popularity of Women's Basketball, just look at the numbers. More people watched the NCAA Women's Final than the Men's..

The WNBA saw its highest attendance in over 20 years and just inked a $2.2 Billion dollar TV deal—the Golden State Valkyries secured 20,000 deposits for season tickets, even before they drafted a team.

What's fueling this fan frenzy and what could this do for the future of Women's Sports? This is the beginning of a week-long series "The Rise of the W: The booming popularity of Women's Basketball".

The Bay Area is about to add another professional sports team and it comes as women's basketball is enjoying monumental television and attendance success.

The timing couldn't be more perfect for the Golden State Valkyries, the sister team of the Warriors.

Both are owned by Joe Lacob, who's credited with revitalizing San Francisco's Mission Bay with the state of the art Chase Center,  home court for both teams.

In this week's special series "The Rise of the W: The Booming Popularity of Women's Basketball", KCBS Radio's Holly Quan examines what it takes to build a championship team from the ground up.

It's a bandwagon a lot of people admit to jumping on this year: Women's basketball. Record setting TV viewership. Tens of thousands of seat deposits for the Golden State Valkyries' inaugural season.

This Friday night, Chase Center hosts the Bay Area Women's Classic, a double header of collegiate women's teams.

Rookie phenoms Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have drawn millions to the game, but for some Bay Area fans its goes back further than that.

Before there was Caitlin, Bay Area women's basketball fans knew the name Sabrina—Walnut Creek's Sabrina Ionescu.

Embraced as a daughter of the East Bay, heralded as a star of the East Coast.

With the Bay Area abuzz over the launch of the Golden State Valkyries, no one is more excited than the young players who look to the WNBA for inspiration and opportunity.

Tonight, Chase Center hosts its first ever women's collegiate basketball double header: Stanford vs Ohio State and # 1 ranked UCLA vs. Creighton.  You may not realize it but the Greater Bay Area is a hot bed of young female basketball talent.
