Thousands of people live on the Bay Area's Treasure Island, and of those thousands, hundreds go hungry every day.

With one grocery store and two restaurants, Treasure Island is isolated from the rest of the city, making it difficult for residents to get enough food.

A civic organization, One Treasure Island, has secured a $500,000 grant to feed Treasure Island locals, as nearly 300 go hungry on a regular basis. Not only is the civic organization feeding those in need, but they’ve taken the diversity of the community into account as well.

"Treasure Island is one of the most diverse San Francisco neighborhoods," said Nella Goncalves, deputy director of One Treasure Island. "We wanted to be able to bring food that represented the folks that live on the island."

The grant will fund $25,000 meals and 150 gift cards for free meals, which can be used at food trucks on the island every Saturday.

The civic organization will also be providing free food five days a week. Some meals require registration while others do not.

To register for Monday’s meal, call 415-800-5937.

Treasure Island may be out of sight and out of mind for many, but One Treasure Island reminds San Francisco that those communities are a part of the city and should not be forgotten.
